Reading AHEPA Chapter Has Long History of Helping the Church

When Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Reading, Pa., needed help, the Reading AHEPA Chapters would always step up. Did you know that the Icon Screen at the church from 1947 to 1989 was donated by the Reading AHEPA Chapter? This plaque, which hangs to the right of the current Icon Screen, was donated by Brother Gust C. Kraras.

HISTORIC EVENT: AHEPA SUPREME PRESIDENT ATTENDS 90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF SIX PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTERS

New members to the Order of AHEPA were given their oaths by the Supreme President.

Six Pennsylvania AHEPA Chapters Come Together to Celebrate Their 90th Anniversaries

Six AHEPA chapters in Power District 4 came together in Reading, Pa., to celebrate their 90th anniversaries, Nov. 19, 2015.

Supreme President John W. Galanis and several Supreme Lodge officers attended the milestone event that commemorated: Chapter 60, Allentown, Pa.; Chapter 61, Reading, Pa.; Chapter 64, Harrisburg, Pa.; Chapter 65, Bethlehem, Pa.; Chapter 71, Lancaster, Pa.; and Chapter 79, Chester-Delco, Pa.

"We are proud of these chapters and their charitable works that have  served to strengthen their communities for nine decades," Supreme President John W. Galanis said. "We thank Reading Chapter 61 for taking the initiative to invite surrounding chapters to come together in celebration of this landmark and special occasion." 

Supreme President Galanis presented a unique certificate to each of the six chapter presidents. Brothers from the chapters shared stories of their founding members and the obstacles and challenges they faced to charter their chapters.

3 Students From Berks County Awarded AHEPA District Scholarships

Three students with ties to the Gust C. Kraras Chapter No. 61 were awarded Power District No. 4 Scholarships for 2015.

The scholarship recipients are Stavana Donohue, Anastasis Phyrillas and Maria Phyrillas.

A total of 55 District Scholarships were awarded at the District Convention.

Gust C. Kraras has been chronicling the history of Greek-Americans in Berks County (and the history of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Reading, Pa.) for more than 50 years. His efforts were featured today in an article in the Reading Eagle.
